How does one decide who is a coward and who is brave?

In my observation, most people think of bravery as having the resolve to hit back when someone hit them or having the capacity to not bow down even when you are outnumbered.

I think the resolve to stand up in face of adversities might be or might not be a case of bravery. It means that hitting back at someone might not necessarily be a case of bravery. For example, people generally fight back in a life or death situation which is not so much a case of bravery. A house lizard also jumps back if you keep on harassing it for some time.

If not the capacity to fight back, then what is the sign of bravery?

Knowing what is the right thing to do but not being able to gather the courage to do it, is a sign of cowardice. Knowing that you are wrong but not able to accept it is a sign of cowardice. Not being able to look at yourself and acknowledge the truth is a sign of cowardice.

And the capacity to fight with all these things is a sign of bravery.
